Embedded & Shredded: Advanced Embedded System Hacking

Come learn to hack the tech used on your devices. If you build medical devices, this hands-on course shows you how an attacker actually approaches your hardware — so you can find and fix the weaknesses first. Across a few sessions in the Biohacking Village, you'll work through the same techniques used to compromise embedded systems in the wild: firmware extraction and analysis, hardware debugging, and PCB reverse engineering.
What you'll do
- •Visually inspect and document a device to map components, debug interfaces, and attack surfaces
- •Decode board communication protocols with logic analyzers
- •Exfiltrate live data over SPI, JTAG, and SWD, and use chip-off / deadbugging to reach embedded storage
- •Reverse-engineer bare-metal firmware in Ghidra with advanced plugins
- •Probe embedded defenses — encryption, disabled debug interfaces, glitching, and fault injection
- •Chain hardware-level access into higher-level exploits — from physical interfaces all the way up to network-exposed services
Everything's provided — all the gear, a demo target board, and an interactive Jupyter notebook to guide you through each exercise. Just bring yourself and your curiosity; no need to source your own hardware.
Why it matters for manufacturers: Understanding these attack paths firsthand is the fastest way to harden your products, shift security left in your development life cycle, and ship devices that hold up against real-world threats.
Who should attend: Intermediate to experienced engineers, developers, and security professionals working on embedded or connected medical devices. Not suited for those with little to no hacking or development experience.
